Launched over 55 years ago, the Guinness World Records has seen and recorded literally millions of world records, from the breathtaking to the bizarre.
Over the years records have been set publicly with the world watching such as in Olympic events, whilst others have been set in the privacy of people’s homes. There are records which often makes one wonder how on earth people came up with the idea in the first place, whereas others are a source of inspiration for people to try the very best and work hard to achieve their goals.

Heaviest Vehicle Pulled Over 100 feet

On the 15th September 2008 in Canada, man of the cloth Kevin Fast donned a harness and looked across at the rig which he was about to strap himself to. The good reverend attached himself to the truck and proceeded to pull the vehicle which weighed 57,243 kg over 100 feet of level ground on live television, breaking his previous record set in May the year before.

Heaviest Colossal Squid

Fishermen in the Ross Sea, Antarctica got a shock when they pulled in a colossal squid. This form of squid is generally smaller than the giant squid but much heavier. This particular specimen turned out to be heavier than any other squid which had been seen before weighing in at (a colossal) 45kg and stretching out for over ten meters. The squid was sent to New Zealand to be tested in order for experts to find out more about the still largely mysterious creatures.

Largest Playing Card Structure

On the 15th October 2007 in Texas, Bryan Berg demonstrated an incredible amount of patience, skill and steadiness of hands when he completed the largest free standing structure made completely from playing cards. The structure which bore no real resemblance to any normal house of cards and looked more like a princess castle, was a staggering 7.86 meters tall.

First Car to Break the Sound Barrier

Andy Green went to Black Rock Desert in 1997 to set the new land speed record. Not only did he manage this, but in doing so, he managed to exceed the speed of sound (768 mph or 1,236 km/h). The sonic boom which came from breaking the sound barrier was felt miles away in a school. This remarkable record was set 50 years almost to the day after the sound barrier had been broken in an aircraft for the first time.

Longest Snake in Captivity

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium was home to Fluffy, the reticulated python. The enormous snake measured a full 24 feet or 7.3 meters in length. Unfortunately, Fluffy dies in October 2010 due to a tumor but the workers at the zoo are pleased to know that she still holds the world record for being the longest snake in captivity.
